The Virtual Interview!
W
hat this page will do is attempt to give you, the Employer, a better concept of where I, the job Candidate, am coming from, so you can develop a feel of whether you want to interview me.Q: How long have you been working on web development?
A: I have been designing web pages for about a year now.
Q: What sorts of pages have you designed?
A: I have designed numerous pratice pages while learning the ins and outs of web design. I've used FrontPage, ColdFusion, and Arachnaphilia. I've also played around with NetObjects Fusion, which I also liked. the difference between these is that NetObjest's Fusion and FrontPage are WYSIWYG editors. ColdFusion calls itself a What You See is What you need. And Arachnaphilia is an HTML editor. It helps with the technical coding, but you still have to know HTML and any other plugins, like Applets and CGI. So admittedly I am not a purist programmer. And while there are many programmers who will sneer at my use of editors, the fact is that in the end the average "surfer" doesn't know, or care, about how the code was written. They only care if it grabs their attention.
Q: You professinal background is in logistics - planning/purchasing and distribution, why have you decided to make such a drastic career change?
A: Good question.
Q: Thank you.
A: Your welcome. Purchasing and planning does not offer any room for creativity. It is very cut and dry, straight forward, black and white and any other cliched analogies you can think of. If you need a part, you either buy it, or send it out for repair. Badaboom, badabing. It is fine for my friends and peers at ICL, but it is stifling for me. I moved from being the DC (Distribution Center)supervisor because I was burnt out by spending 18 months working 12 - 14 hour six and seven days a week. I went in planning because along with the normal 40 hour work week, it seemed to offer more intellectual challenges. I thought I could learn something new. Come to find out that was a load of crap. And to be blunt, it bores the hell out of me. I've gone into web design because it offers the opportunity to use my innate creativity. And I believe that web development is still in it's infancy, and it is so exciting to me. I love to write, it is the creative thought process, I have been addicted to it since I was eight or nine and wrote my first short story. There is something about the act of creation that just turns me on. (In fact if I was God there would be billions and billions of universes. I mean why stop at one?) And web design uses the same process and is actually even better because now I can use audio and visual to enhance. I love it.
Q: But you have the opportunity with ICL to design a wbe page, why would you choose to leave a company you have been with for 12 years?
A: I was selected to be on this project because I have been working on my own. The page is going to be a static information page. You know, who we are, and what we do. The graphics will include pictures of the Purchasing Group, and an Org. Chart. Challenging? Not particularly. And after it is done, and loaded, then I go back to buying. And there aren't any other options with in the company to move to. If there were I would be exploring them.
Q: What is your strongest personal asset?
A: At the risk of sounding immodest. My intellect, my creativity, and my tenacity, and my ambition. If I don't know how to do something, I learn how to do it. And once I take on a project, I don't stop until I am finished. Also, I work well under pressure, in fact I am a bit of a stress junky. During the move from California to Dallas, I had a blast as we overcame every obstacle thrown at us. It was an insane time, and myself and the repair operations manager were flying by the seat of our pants because we were told we had to plan the whole move until a two weeks before the move began, but I cannot remember a time when I have enjoyed my job. The point is deadlines don't scare me. Challenges only empower me, get my adrenaline flowing, and I'm an adrenaline junky too. If you read my personal interests you might have gathered that fact.
Q: Okay, so name one weakness.
A: Jeeze, I didn't know this was going to be this tough... Okay one weakness...I am not real politically astute. I have been known to open mouth and insert foot from time to time. What I mean by that is this: It has been my experience that there are two kinds of managers. The first kind is actively listens to what you are saying, will seek out opinions and generally runs a shop based on open communications. Where people feel free to voice their opinions even if they are contradictory to the managers. Then there are those who don't like dissent. I tend to get in trouble with the second kind, because if they are making an unsound decision, or have unrealistic expectations, I tend express them, sometimes quite bluntly. So if given the choice, I'll take manager type number one. If you, or the manager you are hiring me for, is type two. Do us both a favor and don't hire me.
